Step 1

The first step in structured play is to create an inventory of the items needed to accomplish the task. Use this space to write down the "Elements" of the task.

Step 2

The second step is to create a single place where the Elements are stored together on a single tray or in a single cubby that is accessible at the appropriate height for the individual.

Step 3

The third step is to create a clear place where the task can be accomplished and add a mat to the cubby or tray that first the space and defines the area to which the activity is confined.

The fourth step is to write out the steps to execute the task properly.

The fifth step is to try it yourself from the height and perspective of the individual. 1) retrieve the Elements, 2) put out the mat, 3) do the task, 4) clean up and replace the Elements to their original location.

The sixth step is to make a video or take step-by-step snapshots of the task being performed correctly for non-verbal learning.
